Heretic + Hexen: Updated Re-release of Two Dark Shooters
Heretic + Hexen is an updated re-release of two dark, magic-infused shooters that helped shape the genre. The original Heretic and Hexen launched in 1994 and 1995 on a modified DOOM engine, introducing important ideas to first-person action games: an inventory system, vertical aiming, and distinct character classes.
The edition includes Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, plus two new episodes: Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur. In total, the package offers 117 campaign maps and 120 deathmatch maps.
The re-release adds online deathmatch and co-op for up to 16 players, local split-screen for up to 8 players, mod support through an in-game browser, widescreen display, quick save/load, modern controller support, and a toggle to switch between the original and enhanced balance. It also features improved performance up to 4K and 120 FPS on a compatible display, an updated Tome of Power soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult, a Vault section with concept art and unused sprites, and accessibility options.
Release and Developers
Heretic + Hexen was released on August 7, 2025. The re-release was developed by id Software and Nightdive Studios, with Bethesda Softworks as publisher. The Steam key is available for purchase at Ashop.
