What is Shadowrun Returns
Shadowrun Returns is a tactical turn-based role-playing game released on July 25, 2013. It was developed by Harebrained Schemes, which self-published the game after a successful Kickstarter campaign. It is based on the cult tabletop universe Shadowrun, created a quarter of a century ago: here cyberpunk and classic fantasy coexist.
The creator of the original universe, Jordan Weisman, returned to Shadowrun to modernize the classic. Magic returned to the world and awakened powerful beings from myths and legends — elves, trolls, orks, and dwarves now live alongside humans. At the same time, technology has intertwined with flesh and consciousness: implants, neural interfaces, life in the shadow of corporate hyperstructures.
Who you are in this world
The player takes on the role of a runner — a mercenary outcast working in the gray zone between the law and the criminal underworld. Ruthless corporations stop at nothing for profit, and your skills and instincts are your only capital. The turn-based combat system lets you carefully plan every encounter, combining gunfire, magic, and hacking.
The game belongs to the RPG, strategy, and adventure genres — with a focus on narrative and tactics, without an open world. It appeals to fans of classic isometric RPGs and lovers of dark dystopian settings.
