Guardians of Middle-earth is a multiplayer game at the crossroads of Action and Strategy: essentially a team arena in the spirit of DotA, transplanted into the fantasy universe of J. R. R. Tolkien. Matches are built around teams of up to five players: you can face off against each other on the arena or take on an AI-controlled team of the same size. The goal is clear from the first minutes — push through to the enemy base and destroy it. The game features more than 30 playable characters, mostly drawn from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Among them are Bilbo, Sauron, Legolas, Gandalf, and Gollum, and the heroes' visual style is based on Peter Jackson's film trilogies. There are also characters who don't appear directly in the books or films, such as Arathorn, Aragorn's father.
Characters are split between the forces of good and evil so that battles keep the world's internal logic intact — for example, Kili won't fight against Thorin. Saruman stands apart from this divide, able to join either side. At the same time, Guardians of Middle-earth puts the emphasis not on duels between individual champions but on clashes between armies: bases regularly spawn minions that march into battle alongside the players.
The RPG element here is minimal — there are no items or upgrades within matches. That makes the game feel more like a strategic, RTS-flavored standoff, where the map, pushing lanes, towers, and coordinated team play matter most. The developers are Monolith Productions and Zombie Studios, the publisher is Warner Bros. Interactive, and the release date is listed as December 5, 2012. Platforms include Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3, with a Metacritic score listed at 56.
