What this expansion adds
Inns & Cathedrals is the first major expansion for digital Carcassonne, released on Steam on April 5, 2018 under the Asmodee Digital brand. It's built for players who already know the base game and want to raise the tactical stakes: new wagers, new risks, and new ways to lose the game in the final moves.
The expansion adds 18 new tiles along with several mechanics that shift the familiar balance:
- Taverns on roads — double the points for a completed road, but if the road is left unfinished by the end of the game, it scores nothing.
- Cathedrals in cities — each tile of a completed city with a cathedral is worth 3 points instead of the usual 2. An unfinished city with a cathedral scores no points at all.
- The big meeple — counts as two ordinary followers, making it harder for opponents to contest control of a feature. Each player only has one, though.
This all-or-nothing design makes the closing moves noticeably tenser: every tile placement now carries real risk. The expansion was developed by Asmodee Digital, the studio behind the digital version of base Carcassonne.
Who it's for
Inns & Cathedrals is aimed at experienced Carcassonne players who find the base game too relaxed. The genre is casual board strategy, but this expansion cuts down on lucky wins — tactical pressure builds with every turn.
